Recent Hail Storm in Phoenix

October 5, 2010 Hail Storm in Phoenix

The hail storm on October 5, 2010 produced hail as large as 3″ in Maricopa County. Hailstones larger than tennis balls pounded down during the evening rush hour, causing major damage to cars and roofs.

The hardest hit areas in the Phoenix metro were Scottsdale and West Chandler. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimated $2.811 billion in property damage resulted from that single hail incident. On average, hail insurance claims total $1 billion of damage to property and crops each year.

Arizona is generally not a hail damage hotspot. The NOAA ranked Arizona 44th for major hail events in 2012 with 7 storms. In 2011 there were 20 major hail events. Yet the historic October 2010 hail storm caused Arizona to rank first that year for the most insured-property losses.

Since then, Maricopa County has had smaller hail storms with 1″ to 1.5″ hail on 7/18/11, 9/10/11 and 9/11/11. The snow, hail and rain storms on February 20, 2013 and March 8, 2013 in Phoenix produced mostly pea size hail.
