On 8/22 at approximately 3:22 PM, a severe hail storm took place over Salt Lake County, Utah causing widespread damage from 1.47″ hailstones. This damage contributed to property losses county-wide, including damage to roof coverings and vehicles. Crops and gardens around the state were damaged by the hail and at least 3 lightning-ignited wildfires sprang up during the storms on Wednesday.
The Salt Lake City area was struck by quarter sized hail in the afternoon hours that later turned into ping pong sized hail. The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning as well as a flash flood warning. The storms produced 60 mile per hour winds which drove the hail to severely impact residential dwellings and commercial buildings in the area.
Hail storms are common in Salt Lake City, State, where on a typical year there may be only 2 days of hail.
