Stillmore, Gerogia

On 7/22/2018 at approximately 5:35 PM, a severe hail storm took place over Candler County, Georgia causing widespread damage from the 2.75″ hailstones.  This damage contributed to property losses, including damage to roof coverings and vehicles.

The Candler County area was struck with ping pong ball sized hail in the evening hours. The hail was accompanied by severe weather from thunderstorms. The storms produced winds up to 60 mile per hour, strong enough to knock down several trees, and drove the hail to severely impact residential dwellings, commercial buildings, and vehicles in the area.

Hail storms are uncommon in Stillmore, Georgia, where on a typical year there may be only 2 days of hail.

Nationwide, hail insurance claims total $1 billion of damage to property and crops each year. Typically, 1″ hail or larger causes damage to roof coverings and exterior surfaces, but depending on the material and existing condition, smaller hail can also produce damage. Hail is often part of other severe weather damage, including tornadoes, thunderstorms or lightning strikes.
