On 10/21/2018 during the evening hours, a severe hail storm took place over Sonoita, AZ and Apache Junction, AZ causing widespread damage from 1.75″ and 1.50″ hailstones, respectively.  This damage contributed to property losses county-wide, including damage to roof coverings and vehicles.

The Santa Cruz county area was struck by golf ball sized hail at 5:00 PM, CDT. The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning. The storms produced 60 mile per hour winds which drove the hail to severely impact residential dwellings and commercial buildings in the area.

The Pinal county area was struck by ping pong sized hail at 7:20 PM, CDT. The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning. The storms produced 60 mile per hour winds which drove the hail to severely impact residential dwellings and commercial buildings in the area.

Hail storms are uncommon in both Sonoita, AZ and Apache Junction, AZ, where on a typical year there may be only 3 days of hail and 1 day of hail, respectively.
