The Downtown Historic District covers all or part of eighteen blocks of mostly one- and two-story brick commercial buildings with stone and terra-cotta accents, from the 1892 Idaho Furniture Company Building to the four-story 1916 Yellowstone Hotel, and west-side residential neighborhoods hold Colonial, Tudor Revival, Queen Anne, and Craftsman homes built largely between 1900 and 1941. That is unreinforced-masonry-heavy stock on seismic ground: brick parapets, load-bearing walls, and pre-code framing are the components most exposed to shaking and to freeze-thaw. Newer wood-frame subdivisions climb the northeastern slopes and east bench into wildfire terrain, through winters that bring on the order of 40 inches of snow and overnight lows near 15 degrees.
