Fit to the facts matters more than a long resume.
What credentials should a forensic engineering expert have?
Start with licensure. The individual doing the analysis and signing the report should be a licensed Professional Engineer (PE). A PE license shows the person has met education, examination, and experience requirements and is accountable for competent work. If the case involves fire origin and cause, ask whether the investigator holds certification from the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), which trains and tests investigators on fire science and cause determination.
Credentials alone do not win cases. A qualified expert whose background does not match the failure at issue is a weak choice. Confirm that the person's engineering discipline and hands-on experience line up with the physical question in front of you, whether that is a structural collapse, an electrical fire, or a failed product component.
Does the expert's expertise match your specific case?
Forensic engineering is broad, so match the expert to the failure. A structural engineer who evaluates load paths and framing is the right call for a collapse or a foundation dispute. An engineer with electrical failure experience is who you want for an arcing event or an appliance fire. Product and component failure analysis calls for someone who understands materials, manufacturing defects, and how parts break under real conditions.

An investigator who follows NFPA 921 works through origin, ignition source, first fuel, and cause using the scientific method, and rules out alternatives with evidence rather than assumption. For structural and product work, look for the same discipline: documented site inspection, preserved evidence, testing where warranted, and conclusions that follow from the data. An expert whose method is transparent and standards-based holds up far better under cross-examination than one who cannot explain how they got from evidence to opinion.

What makes a forensic engineering report credible?
Read a sample report before you hire. It should note what was ruled out and why. Watch for reports that overstate certainty, skip the reasoning, or reach a conclusion the evidence does not support.
The report is also your communication tool. Adjusters use it to set reserves and resolve claims, and attorneys use it to brief a case and prepare for deposition. A report that a claims professional or a jury can follow without an engineering degree is worth more than a technically dense one that no one outside the field can use.
How important is deposition and trial experience?
Very. An expert can be brilliant on paper and still struggle under cross-examination. Ask how many times the person has been deposed, how often they have testified at trial, and whether any opinions have been excluded. An experienced witness explains complex engineering to a lay jury clearly, stays inside the limits of the evidence, and does not overreach when pressed. That composure protects the strength of an otherwise sound opinion.
Also confirm availability and responsiveness. Deadlines for expert disclosure and reports are firm, and a qualified expert who cannot meet your schedule does not help the case.
