The southern San Joaquin Valley is ringed by major faults, among them the San Andreas, the Garlock, and the White Wolf. The White Wolf rupture produced the 1952 Kern County earthquake at magnitude 7.3, the strongest in California since 1906, and the shaking wrecked unreinforced masonry across downtown Bakersfield; the city was still demolishing and retrofitting damaged brick buildings into the 1990s. That seismic threat has not gone away.

The ground is also sinking. Bakersfield lies within the San Joaquin Valley, one of the largest areas of human-caused land subsidence on earth, where reduced surface-water supply has driven heavy groundwater pumping and compacted the aquifer system; the USGS has measured subsidence across the valley at rates reaching hundreds of millimeters a year. Most of the building stock over that ground is wood-frame housing, largely stucco on slab, much of it built during the city's rapid growth from the 1970s onward. A small pre-1940 downtown core still holds older masonry, and commercial and oilfield sites add tilt-up concrete, steel, and metal buildings that all work through the region's extreme summer heat.
