Ridgecrest sits in the Eastern California Shear Zone and was the focus of the July 2019 sequence: an M6.4 foreshock on July 4 centered about 11 miles east-northeast of town, then an M7.1 mainshock roughly 34 hours later, the largest Southern California earthquake in 20 years. The M7.1 ruptured the ground surface for tens of miles and produced violent shaking near the fault. The housing stock has a median build year near 1981, and close to nine percent is mobile or manufactured. Wood-frame slab-on-grade and stucco predominate, and the pre-1980 stock went up before modern seismic provisions, leaving the cripple-wall and soft-story weaknesses the 2019 sequence exposed.
