The built environment reflects heavy post-war growth: about 45,206 housing units with a median construction year of 1976 and 56 percent detached single-family homes, over an older core with roughly 6.5 percent built before 1940. As the self-styled Salad Bowl of the World, the valley floor also carries extensive food-processing, cold-storage, and packing and cooling facilities, many running ammonia refrigeration.
