San Francisco lies between the San Andreas fault, which produced the 1906 earthquake near magnitude 7.8, and the Hayward fault to the east. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake registered magnitude 6.9, and USGS puts the odds of a magnitude 6.7 or greater Bay Area quake before 2043 at about 72 percent.
